2018 - Falstaff

2011 - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The most impressive wines I tasted this year from Alto Adige came from Cantina di Terlano. Simply put, these are reference point wines. I can’t imagine these wines not being represented in any serious cellar.

  • Pinot Bianco 2002 '96

    93 points
The 1996 Chardonnay is truly impressive for its remarkable freshness. Despite its fifteen years of age, the 1996 is bright, focused and full of energy! If anything, varietal aromatics and flavors haven't quite emerged. For now this remains a mid-weight, mineral-driven white that speaks more of Alto Adige than it does of Chardonnay. The finish maintains notable focus, drive and harmony.
  • Pinot Bianco 2002 '97

    93 points
The 1997 Chardonnay caresses the palate with voluptous fruit. This is a warm, radiant Chardonnay within the context of Alto Adige, yet all of the elements are beautifully woven together. There is just enough minerality to keep wine vital and fresh. A round, creamy finish is peppered with varietal fruit, crushed rocks, lime and the faintest vein of oak. This is a superb wine from Terlano.
  • Quarz '08

    93 points
The 2008 Sauvignon Quarz is a touch reserved in this vintage, but it's the persistence on the palate that truly elevates it to a high level. Dramatic, deep and finely-knit the Quarz blossoms on the palate with marvelous complexity and class. Ripe peaches, apricots, flowers and mint dominate over some of the greener Sauvignon notes that are found in the Winkl. Both are marvelous.
  • Lunare '07

    92 points
The 2007 Gewürztraminer Lunare boasts fabulous depth and richness in its varietal fruit. This shows marvelous intensity in a full-bodied style that comes across as just a touch heavy. As good as the Lunare is, I increasingly think Terlano's top wines are not significantly better, more complex of more pleasurable than the mid-level range.
  • Vorberg '07

    92 points
The 2007 Pinot Bianco Riserva Vorberg is a pretty, sleek wine layered with expressive varietal fruit and delicate, nuanced aromas. The finely-knit, mineral laced finish shows hints of peach, apricot and mint. This is a fabulous, totally classy wine, especially for the money.
  • Vorberg '06

    92 points
The 2006 Pinot Bianco Riserva Vorberg is a touch rounder and creamier than the 2007, with hints of smoke and flint that add complexity to the fruit. Here, too, the finish is marvelous for its texture, depth and sheer class.
  • Porphyr '07

    92 points
The 2007 Lagrein Riserva Porphyr is quite a bit weightier and richer than the Riserva Gries. An array of mineral-infused dark fruit, cured meats, ash and crushed rocks meld together beautifully in this taut, focused Lagrein. As delicious as the Porphyr is, I am not sure it is an appreciably better, more interesting or more pleasurable wine than the Riserva Gries. I know which of the two I would prefer to drink.
  • Gries '07

    92 points
The 2007 Lagrein Riserva Gries emerges from the glass with an exciting melange of crushed rocks, violets, cassis, blackberries and rosemary. The Gries shows marvelous intensity in its varietal dark fruit and fabulous elegance in its overall textural and structural elements. This is a superb Lagrein.
  • Gewürztraminer '09

    92 points
The 2009 Gewürztraminer is a gorgeous, vivid wine. Passion fruit, papaya, cloves and mint are just some of the nuances that flow from this beautiful, totally sexy Gewürztraminer. all of the elements meld together seamlessly on the generous, creamy finish.
  • Kreuth '08

    91 points
The 2008 Chardonnay Kreuth sparkles on the palate with ripe, tropical fruit, spices and minerals. All of the elements come together beautifully in this expressive nuanced Chardonnay. This is yet another fabulous wine for the money.
  • Winkl '09

    91 points
Varietal flavors, Alto Adige character and the personality of the vintage all come together beautifully in the 2009 Sauvignon Winkl. The finish shows tons of detail and nuance. This is an unusual Sauvignon of remarkable pedigree and harmony. It is highly recommended.
  • Monticol '07

    91 points
The 2007 Pinot Noir Riserva Montigl flows with the essence of red berries, crushed flowers, sweet rosemary and tobacco. There is a pliancx to the fruit and silkiness to the tannin that elevated the Montigl among the great Pinots of Alto Adige. Soft and supple throughout, the Montigl delivers considerable pleasure in a juicy, forward but mid-weight style. It is totally classy from start to finish.
  • Pinot Bianco '09

    90 points
The 2009 Pinot Bianco is a superb entry-level white redolent of crisp pears, green apples and flowers. This clean, focused white delivers tons of class and elegance in a vibrant, piercing, yet beautifully balanced style.
