2014 - Jancis Robinson

[...] there is a clutch of Cantina Terlano wines in the Alto Adige wing that were tasted at a remarkable lunch hosted by their importers Astrum Wine Cellars earlier this year. It was my first visit to Restaurant Gordon Ramsey on Royal Hospital Road, and it was without question the best lunch of my life. The very special nature of this unique co-operative's wines was of course a significant factor - but the sheer quality of the service and the food was remarkable too.

Generally, I'm not much inclined to crow about the privileged conspicuous consumption that the wine trade is lucky enough to enjoy - but this is worth making an exception for. I did not eat dinner that day.

The notes that follow are a fine illustration of Italy at its best.

  • Pinot Bianco 2002 '79

    18 points
Very bright, shimmering gold. Loads of green apple and floral scent. Gorgeous green herbal note - like cucumber and mint? Other-worldly - unfurls like a rose.
  • Pinot Bianco 2002 '02

    17+ points
Interesting - compared with the 1979, this really is immature. Light sherbet character, very unassuming. It's like a young Hunter Sémillon - you'd never know what's in store ...
  • Pinot Bianco 2002 '92

    17 points
Four years fermentation, one in cask, the rest in steel. Mid gold colour. Rare indeed on the nose - lapsang souchong, star anise, orange peel. Creamy texture. Fruit is in remission, while the smoky flavours take charge. Charismatic.
  • Nova Domus '09

    16.5+ points
Vibrant herbal character, and a bit of sweaty aroma. Creamy, tender and finely balanced.
  • Terlaner '56

    16.5 points
Bottled 1957. Gold colour. Dairy and pineapple aromas, plus a little smoke. Zero oxidative deterioration. Honeyed and truffled. Long, smooth and soft. Perhaps getting frail on the palate, but lengthy and interesting. Intact, but undeniably ancient.
  • Pinot Bianco 2002 '90

    16 points
Bottled 2000. Honey, burnt sugar, light palate - and a little bit of oxidative spoil. Metallic edge.
  • Nova Domus '99

    15.5 points
Magnum. A blend of Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Some barrique ageing (only ever used in the 1999 and 2000 vintages). The vanilla influence is very apparent. Smooth, but slightly modest palate. Doesn't really shine.
  • Pinot Bianco '66

    15 points
Bronze colour. Mushroomy and slightly bitter. Faded glory here - hollow. Gets a little more interesting with time in the glass, but is ultimately skeletal.
